Semiotics: The best kept secret in (intentional) media
We know that propaganda uses visuals and messaging to influence behavior and feelings.
Advertising uses a similar approach to influence behavior and purchasing. There’s an incredible opportunity to use the same methodology in an empathetic and ethically aware way.
Intentionally crafting with empathy, inclusion, and imagery, sequencing and messaging that supports these messages will make your stories and films richer, more symbolically grounded, and less likely to run the risk of woke activists burning down your dreams.
Cultural Viscera
Cultural Viscera is a self-propelled and self-funded research project that’s taken 15 years from concept to launch.
Ultimately an intensely layered interactive experience, it explores the nature of design, film, and culture using Kubrick’s The Shining as an object model.
I’ve built an experience that allows users to walk through the film in an exploratory and hyper-contextualized way.
Seeing all information presented (from the production choices, the costumes, the styling, the dialogue, the sound, and the sequence) as equal data provides people with the ability to understand design as a language.
To complete this work, large format charts were made to break out the data, screens and an Invision prototype created, software built, 450k words of data written, and the experience launches 2023.
See the prototype.
Created and worked on between 2016-2020.
Large format charts: The Interview, Closing Day, A Month Later, Tuesday & Thursday, Saturday, Monday, Wednesday Part I, Wednesday Part II, Wednesday Part III, 8am, 4pm Part I, 4pm Part II
